THE ADVANTAGES OF “RSS WEBSITES”

THE ADVANTAGES OF “RSS WEBSITES”

RSS - or what is now known as “Really Simple Syndication” - is a file format that is incorporated by Internet users in their websites to allow for ‘web syndication’, making their web content available in a format that can be universally understood by other people.

In essence, RSS is a ‘mini database’ that contains headlines and descriptions (a summary or a line or two of the full article) of your web content, including hyperlinks that enable users to link back to the full article of their choice.

RSS websites - that is, websites that contain RSS ‘feeds’ (articles or postings) - typically have colorful graphics to indicate to users that the specific web content is available through RSS feeds. These graphics are usually depicted by orange rectangles that are usually marked with ‘RSS’ or ‘XML’.

With its increased popularity, RSS is now being adopted and used by more website owners or publishers. Today, numerous resources are now available that aid Internet surfers (and even beginners as well) on how to set up and use RSS.

Setting up RSS feeds and adding them to your website can be a simple process that does not involve a lot of time or any money. Listed below are some simple and basic steps that you might want to follow

1. Have your web content and/or news in an RSS feed format, such as XML (appropriate and ‘ready-made’ feeds are also available from other sources).

2. Click the orange graphic - this is the RSS feed icon. Take note of the URL of the RSS feed; this will be displayed in the address bar (for Internet Explorer).

3. Input the feed URL on your RSS feed creation program.

4. Click on the “Generate Feed” button. This will generate the RSS code for your web content.

5. Enter the RSS code in the appropriate place on your own website.

Having created an RSS feed for your website, next comes the task of publishing your web content and news and having them displayed on other sites and headline viewers. This is made possible with the use of RSS readers or aggregators.

RSS readers or news aggregators are used to view particular web contents. RSS readers contain the collection of ‘feeds’ or RSS files from content providers, and they are generally classified into 3 types

- Desktop RSS readers - also known as standalone desktop application, they generally ‘run’ in the background and are similar to an e-mail client, collecting the feeds and refreshing items automatically as they are updated.

- Web-based aggregators - these are online services that enable users to personalize web pages, refreshing them each time the page is accessed or each time a person logs in to the service.

- Plug-in aggregators/readers - these make use of either web browsers or e-mail clients, which allow users to view RSS feeds while inside an existing program.

Having an RSS-enabled website provides Internet users (especially those who are website owners) with the following benefits

- Allows users to generate up-to-date news and postings, as information and content in the RSS readers or aggregators are automatically updated each time the RSS feed is ‘refreshed’.

- Allows users to have control over the information that they wish to view or receive, as they can remove a feed of their choosing any time they want to.

Aside from these benefits, RSS websites are also useful for people who conduct their business in the Internet, particularly in Internet or Online Marketing. RSS can be an effective marketing tool for your website, especially in the following fields

- E-mail marketing and publishing
- Search engine marketing and optimization
- Business blogging
- Internet advertising
- Digital public relations
- Branding and e-commerce

In addition, RSS can ‘power’ your website, providing you with the following

- Valuable, updated, and relevant resources for site visitors and potential clients - RSS is ideal for websites that contain (and syndicate) a lot of information that has to be changed or updated regularly.

- Search engine optimization for the website.

- Increased traffic for the website - your website can ‘harvest’ and display information from other sites, driving more traffic to your own website.

- A wide selection of ‘channels’ for content distribution, such as PDA’s, cellular phones, voice mails, and email ticklers.

- A reliable way to have your web content delivered to Internet users and potential clients - RSS ensures that your site is viewed by the people who are interested in them, without having them blocked and ‘cleaned’ by ISPs or Spam filters.

These are just some of the advantages that RSS can give your website (and your business). The possibilities are endless, as more and more comes up almost everyday. Do not be left behind - take the advantage of the marketing and publishing power of RSS.

Why We Love Wordpress

Posted on June 30th, 2009 in Uncategorized | No Comments »

When looking for information on a new topic, where do you go first? Most people would answer “the Internet.” Now that we find ourselves in this wonderful information age, it’s remarkably easy to find everything from advice on buying a dog to finding a lawyer or looking up the time of the church picnic.

What does this mean for the small business owner? It means that a web presence is absolutely vital in growing your business. Word-of-mouth and referrals are the best way to spread news about your company, but even your existing customers may want to find out more about your hours or fees or services. And who’s going to turn down the business from a customer who chooses your business because of information found on the web?

“But I can’t afford a web designer,” you might say. It really doesn’t need to be as complicated as all that. Sure, companies like Target or Disney or Coke can have videos and close-up pictures and even games. If you’re not running one of those companies, you just want a web presence that will help people find you and the information they need about you. Even a casual computer user can get going with website-building software. Many types, such as SiteSpinner and Ewisoft, are free downloads. You will have to spend a bit of time perusing them to find the one that includes the features you want and directions you can easily follow.

You can build your web presence even further through the use of a weblog (commonly known as a “blog”). Informative articles and up-to-date information about your business can help potential customers find you and make the decision to use your services over that of a competitor. Again, you don’t need to be intimidated by the Internet. There is plenty of help for the creation and maintenance of a blog, most notably the free download WordPress. This flexible application can assist you in customizing and optimizing the content you provide.

If you consider yourself more of a business person than a creative type, you may be stumped for ideas. Again, don’t let the notion of a web presence intimidate you! Begin by deciding what information customers will most need (e.g., general introduction, directions, calendars). Find sites you admire and decide what about them catches your attention. Get started on blogging ideas by checking out a WordPress gallery to see how others have incorporated written updates.

On of the biggest advantages of the Internet is its flexibility. You can begin with baby steps, whatever minimal work makes you comfortable, and eventually lead up to a complete, customer-generating, web presence.

How to Make Money Blogging - Some Quick Tips

Posted on June 29th, 2009 in Uncategorized | No Comments »

When you want to make money blogging, you will discover that there are many options open to you. The truth is that no matter what kind of blogging you do, whether you want to write about puppies, politicians, pirates or pancakes, there is more than likely money to be made.

The power of the Internet means that at any point, there are going to be people who are searching for interesting content and good material. There are plenty of rewards if you can provide that content in a way that they like. Remember that even though it is possible to go overboard and to turn people off, you need to consider the advantages that blogging can give you.

The first way in which many people make money blogging is through self promotion. Do you have a business that you love and care about? It might be small and struggling or it might be growing and healthy. Either way, you are going to need a blog. A blog allows people to post feedback, to get an idea of what you are all about and to really see what kind of updates you are making to your business. It is one more way for your clients to get to know you, and the more that people know you as a person, or a collection of people, the more business they are likely to do with you.

Also be aware that many advertising services will let you put ads on your blog. If you are looking to sell advertising space, there are a number of ways for you to do it. You might consider banner ads or contextual ads along the top of and the side of your blog. It is relatively easy to find a service that will help you, and at the end of the day, you might find that it is actually a way for you to help your readers as well. If you have a blog that is all about pet care, you can have advertisements for good pet care related products along the side and across the top of your blog page.

Another way that you might choose to make money with your blog is to use it as a space to launch an affiliate business. Have you considered having an affiliate business? An affiliate business is basically where you get paid every time you recommend a customer to a product and that customer makes their purchase through your personal affiliate link.

You are going to be talking about a certain industry or product anyway, so you might as well get paid for it. Your blog will need to be very content heavy, but if people are coming to you for good information, they will likely be interested in what products you are willing to advertise as well.

As you can see, there are a number of ways to make money blogging. Remember that you should always put up good content, and that the more regularly you post, the more readers you are going to have. Don’t underestimate the power of blogging and how it can change the way that you make your money!

How Often Should You Post to Your Blog

Posted on June 28th, 2009 in Uncategorized | No Comments »

Two weeks ago, I opted to remove my email address from a listing I subscribed from one blog that aroused my interest.  I never expected that the occurrence of emails I will receive every week will be too much for me and I don’t want to consider it a spam, instead I bookmarked the website.

Sharing my experience above, the frequency of posting to your blog is very important, and many bloggers out there are asking the same question, how often should you post to your blog?  Well I hope what I have to say will help you in answering that question, just bear in my mind, there is no definite answer, it all depends with the following factors described below.

Type of Blog

What is your blog?  This will help you determine the frequency of posting.  If your blog is all about news and current events, posting might take more than once a day depending on the topics being covered.

If your blog is all about product reviews, then the frequency of your blog depends upon the products’ release and information.  If it is all about special events, then frequency of posting may be varied.

If your blog’s type is informative, instructional, spiritual, inspirational, scientific, financial or in general, depending on the importance of what you have to say. You can post more often if you have important or urgent things to impart or less frequent following your regular routine or schedule of posting.

Type of Readers

Who are your readers, who are your targeted audience?  You will have no problems when it comes to your loyal readers, they need your written information, they enjoy reading your post, they know you, they comment on your blog and they follow every post you publish.

To others, personality of each individual varies.  Taking this into consideration,  you should balance the frequency of your posts if you want to invite more readers and followers.   If you post very often, make sure you don’t sacrifice quality over quantity, or some of your readers may consider it spam or splog (spam blog) and they will not consider coming back.

Rhythm & Pattern

Regardless of how many times you post to your blog, you should maintain a rhythm in posting.  2-3 times a week, every weekends, every other day, every other week, or monthly, this way, your readers will know when to visit your blog.  If they expect that on a specific day of the week they will find a fresh new article then make sure that excitement never ceases by posting new articles on those days.

Conclusion

How often should you post to your blog depends upon your judgment, the type of your blog and your targeted audience.  Ideally 2-3 times a week is good enough, but if you have something important to say publish it no matter how often it is, otherwise, relax and stick to your plans.

Going back to my story above, the blog was all about how to invest your money in various ways. The articles I received, although numerous, were informative but the problem is I don’t have that much money to invest in different ways, I guess I am not one his targeted audience.  Even though I unsubscribed from the email newsletter, I might need some of its articles in the future so I bookmarked that blog.  Who knows I might become a millionaire one day and might subscribe again to that site.

There are various options that you can employ to make money online once you have gained good traffic to your website or blog. There are some content based advertisements that you can introduce into your blog to start making money. You can join one of these money making programs like Google ad sense, Kontera, Bidvertiser, adbrite or Adengage. These programs work by implementing their advertising code on your blog so that advertisements that relates to the content of your blog can be shown. Simple Ways to Get More Visitors to Your Blog Or Website

Posted on June 27th, 2009 in Uncategorized | No Comments »

You’ve picked the domain, decided on the design and started posting great content that showcases your expertise.  The hard work is over, right?

Not exactly-after all, you need people to actually read that useful content that you’re diligently cranking out. So how do you get those eyeballs to your site? There are literally hundreds of ways to drive traffic to your blog or website, but here I will highlight just a few of the ways to drive traffic and generate interest in what it is you have to offer.

Write articles: Most of the article directories online are free to submit your articles to. They usually allow you to add a resource box at the end, which can include a blurb about you and your business and a link back to your site.  Some of the directories I like to use include EZine Articles, Go Articles, Idea Marketers and Articles Base.

Comment on other blogs: When you comment on other high-traffic blogs in your niche you not only get a link back to your own site, you’re also boosting your site’s visibility in front of the blog owner and the others leaving comments.

Social media: Provide links to your latest posts on sites like Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter and invite your friends and followers to leave their thoughts on the particular topic in the comments.  You don’t want to do this for every post as it might be viewed as spamming–but it’s perfectly acceptable to occasionally encourage others to click through and read a post you feel particularly proud of.  Also, be sure to include your site’s URL in all of your profiles.

Hold a contest: A great way to generate interest in your site is to hold a contest where the entries are comments left on your post.  For example, you could give away someone else’s product in exchange for writing a post about it and then publicize the contest through your social networks.

Email signature: Most of us send numerous emails in any given day-capitalize on this by adding a link to your site in your signature line.

Basic SEO: You don’t need to be super-knowledgeable about search engine optimization to benefit from it.  If you use the Wordpress blog platform, install the All in One SEO Pack plugin. This post gives some simple and easy to understand tips on SEO in general.

Post in forums: Many online forums and message boards will allow you to use a short signature line at the end of your posts.  You can include a link to your site here.

Blog directories: A simple Google search will reveal that there are many blog directories online where you can list your site for free.  These sites are important because they provide a way to get links to your site–which boosts your ranking in the search engines.

Guest post: Reach out to fellow bloggers in your niche and offer to guest post for them.  Make sure you find out specifically what kind of topics they are looking for and that your audiences both compliment each other.  Offer them a spot guest posting on your blog as well.

Link to other blogs: It’s a good idea to give “link love” to other bloggers by mentioning them in post once in awhile and providing a link to their site.  Think of it as good blogging “karma.”

Post valuable content regularly: I’ve saved what is probably the most important strategy for last.  Many times, this is what makes the difference between blogs that succeed and those that fail.  The above tips are effective for sure, but in the long run this is what will keep people coming back for more as well as draw new readers in.

Website Content

Posted on June 27th, 2009 in Uncategorized | No Comments »

There are many different ways to present your website, but none of these will do you any good if no one wants to stay at or return to your site, due to the lack of quality.

What does your site say, is it worth reading?   I have fell victim to the quantity vs. quality mindset where I believed that as long as I have many posts my site was fine. After reading through some of my past posts on my blog I don’t even want to read them.

Different ways to optimize your website are all over the internet today.  You could spend a fortune buying every book and tool out there to optimize your site.  The one tip I continue to read out of all blogs and books is having good content on your site.

Search engines today are looking to eliminate the irrelevant and focus on the quality.  That is not to say there are not other ways to increase your search engine rankings, however, if you are new to the online scene, starting with the basic of quality content is key.

If you have the quality content in place it will attract more readers and the search engines will find a reason to index you. Along with quality content come comments on your blog or website and by attracting these comments, you will have people generating content for you.

If you believe you have the content in place then venture on into some other methods of optimizing your site.  The content is important however, since there is no reason to increase your link popularity if no one wants to read what you have to say.
