Do you have use for a Machine Gun around here?

Posted on November 21st, 2009 in Marketing | No Comments »

Then perhaps you just need a great ebook!

The opening line is by Elmer Wheeler - considered America’s Greatest Salesman. Millions follow his teachings and have seen infinite success just by putting his advice in place.

Now imagine if you were an Internet Marketer and you could do the same?

Well, now  you can!

I’ve been an affiliate marketer for some time now, and have recently had the pleasure of reviewing ‘Canned Genius: Internet Marketing’. It’s a product which left me completely amazed at some things I had been missing all along.

Canned Genius: Internet Marketing came about after an investigation into scams online. The author, Susan Black, was dismayed by how many people were getting blatantly ripped off, but then she stumbled across a group of people whose backgrounds checked out and were actually selling good services to the public.

She befriended them and then interviewed them about their success, how they really did it, what the key things were that made them join the big leagues and what their biggest recommendations are for others who want to succeed online.

The book is a series of 8 interviews with these successful people, including Andrew Hansen, Colleen Slater and Tristan Bull to name a few.

Its an eye opener and is certainly a great read for anyone in the Internet Marketing business, as these people give an honest and truthful account of their success.

Canned Genius is a highly recommendable product, I really enjoyed reading about the real ways to be successful without all the sales pitch blurb. I also liked that all the contributors offered a free product of their own, some offered advice or a special report just for purchasers of the book.

Let Your Voice be Heard-Create a Blog

Posted on November 21st, 2009 in Uncategorized | No Comments »

Since the beginning of recorded time, mankind has longed to be heard, to be remembered, to have their voice live on after their body is gone, in essence, to record their time on earth.  It used to be that only the rich, educated, or privileged could write, or were allowed to record their own thoughts.  Like most other things, the advent of technology, the home computer, and the internet, have made this inequity nonexistent.

The internet has allowed regular people, all over the world, to communicate with each other in ways never before thought possible.  All of a sudden, people were writing online journals, web-logs, or blogs.

It’s hard to believe that it all started, over ten years ago, with a little web site called OpenDiary.  OpenDiary was revolutionary when it was unleashed on cyberspace in 1998. For the first time, anyone, anywhere could create their own “website” to share whatever was important to them.  It was the first blogging platform to enable commenting on posts, allowing users to collaborate, share, disagree, and discuss the current affairs of their lives. Then, in 1999, we saw the rise of the most popular blogging platform to date- Blogger.com.  Blogger brought blogging, or “web-logging”, to the masses.  Since then, we’ve had a multitude of other blogging websites, with many different formats and serving a plethora of niche markets.

Having all of these fresh new perspectives collectively voicing their opinions can be a little daunting, though.  Even picking someone else’s blog to spend some time reading can be a tough choice.  With so many thousands of people to listen to, how do you pick just one?  Therein lies the beauty of the digital age.  No longer confined to one subscription to one newspaper, people are discovering their own news, following thirty blogs instead of one Wall Street Journal.

So how does one actually go about creating a blog?  It is actually one of the easiest things you will do all day.  In most cases, creating a blog takes absolutely no technical knowledge of designing a website, other than maybe picking out colors or fonts. Most blogging platforms give you little control over actual layout and presentation, but simplify the process so that everybody can get in the game.  The exception to this rule is the platform called WordPress.  Wordpress is open source, which means that anybody can view or change the programming code that makes the application work. Conveniently, this also means that you can add to the code, to simplify repetitive actions or, really, anything imaginable.  Wordpress is the best option for people who want a lot of control over final presentation and a platform with infinite extensibility.

Let’s not forget that thanks to the wonders of modern technology, we aren’t even limited to the written word anymore!  People all over are getting microphones and cameras that connect to the computer to either play radio-host and produce some podcasts (audio “blogs”), or turning the camera on themselves to show the world how they really feel, and creating video blogs, or “vlogs.”

All that’s left now is to find a topic that stirs emotion or passion, develop that idea, and run with it.  Be it print, or audio-visual, just express what is important to you.  Someone, somewhere will be grateful you did.

Increase Your Targeted Twitter Following

Posted on November 20th, 2009 in Uncategorized | No Comments »

Increasing your targeted following on Twitter requires a bit of patience and a well thought-out strategy. Twitter, a micro-blogging social networking site, is popular for businesses because of the no-cost, no-frills way the site is set up. Twitter is used by small companies, as well as larger companies like Starbucks, Dell and JetBlue to connect with their customers and clients, advertise new products, monitor their online brands and in general, monetize their businesses.

There are four steps to increasing your targeted Twitter following. First, follow people on Twitter who you consider to be your target audience. Second, post relevant information about your brand and news that is related to your brand. Third, never spam your followers with auto-tweets, or post the same URL over and over. Finally, follow smart people who are online marketers or who are leaders in your industry.

How to Follow the Right People on Twitter:

Before you start following people, make sure your Twitter feed has at least a few interesting posts. Most people on Twitter will not follow you back if your Twitter feed is blank. After you’ve started your micro-blog feed, start following your target audience. There are two ways you can do this. Go to Search.Twitter.com and type in keywords related to your target audience. Let’s say you are selling an iPhone application. Type in keywords like “iPhone,” “bought an iPhone,” “iPhone app,” and other related keywords. Follow these people. If you post interesting, relevant things, there is a good chance they will follow you back.

You can also find your target Twitter following by going to Twitter and clicking on the “Find People” option. Type in keywords and any relevant industries and locations to find your followers. Start following these people.

Give Your Target Audience Relevant Information:

Post interesting news and reviews about your product, but don’t forget to also post related industry news. For instance, if you sell a particular gadget, you can post news about other gadgets.

One of the most important thing about gaining a targeted following is to retweet well and retweet often. If you see a relevant post by another Twitterer, retweet them. Many times, these Twitterers will see that you have retweeted them, and will follow you. This gives you access to their followers—just click on the “Followers” tab under these people, and start following. Be generous with your retweets—it’s one of the few tried-and-true ways of gaining a following.

Check Search.Twitter.com often. Search for your brand name, for example. Are there happy customers? Follow them and thank them. Do you find angry, disgruntled customers? Follow them, retweet them, and ask them how you can fix the situation. There have been countless examples of people reaching customer service reps on Twitter, and then telling the Internet all about the great service that came from a company they had just recently been bad-mouthing.

Never Spam Your Twitter Followers:

If you spam your followers, they will unfollow you quickly. Spammy posts include: Posting the same URLs over and over again; only posting product descriptions of your own products; having a Twitter handle that looks like this: MyAwesomeProduct1000 instead of something like this: NameofMyProduct; and asking insincere questions. For example, if you sell cars, it would be insincere to post a question like: What is the best car on the road? Twitter users are very savvy and jaded consumers. They know when a brand is being disingenuous.

Follow Smart People to Gain a Smart Following:

There are a lot of online marketers who have used Twitter to help their clients monetize their businesses. Twitter marketing gurus like Guy Kawasaki, Dave Peck and Chris Brogan should be on your Twitter list. You might also want to do a search for corporations who are on Twitter because they are the trailblazers and may offer you a great deal of advice in getting a targeted following.

Consider following your competition to see what kind of tactics they are using to increase their own targeted Twitter following. Smart online marketers monitor their competition on social networks to see what they’re doing right and doing it better. It’s also easier to see when your competition has failed and how you can avoid that. If your competition rarely posts to Twitter and never responds to negative posts, you can quickly fill the gap for your audience.

Patience is Required When Using Twitter to Monetize:

Businesses who take to Twitter to market their brand or products should be aware that using Twitter is a long-term strategy. Gaining access to your targeted following will not happen overnight, but if you use the proper Twitter strategies, it will happen. Be very careful with your Twitter following. Don’t sell to them like you would sell to the Average Joe online. Twitterers can sniff out a sales pitch and unfollow the guilty party in the blink of an eye.

When you have gained your targeted Twitter followers, market to them gently. Instead of sending out tweets that say, “Buy this cool product now,” consider writing a more subtle tweet like this: “Do you need a product that does XYX? This one does.” Instead of posting “New product has just launched,” consider starting a corporate blog, and then post something like this to Twitter: “New blog post: Why we’re so excited” and then end the Twitter post with the URL to your blog.

Always reply to any tweets that people send you. Don’t ignore your Twitter following. If your Twitter following gets too large for you to handle, consider outsourcing some of the work or having your Virtual Assistant take on some of the hours needed to tweet or retweet. However, never have someone tweet for you as if they are you. Twitter is a relationship-building tool, and YOU need to be the one building that relationship. You can always have someone tweet questions to start a conversation, share links to articles or other interesting information, or finding new people to follow, but you should be the one responding and interacting in discussions … not delegating it out to someone else. Be authentic!

Twitter is not a one-way marketing tool. It’s an integrated, holistic approach to marketing. That means staying transparent, interacting with the Twitter community and staying interesting. The quickest way to kill off your Twitter following is to be boring.

How to Sell Ad Space on Your Blog

Posted on November 19th, 2009 in Uncategorized | No Comments »

After investing hours of work into your blog, it’s time to reap the rewards. Advertisers love blogs since the content is keyword rich and the general online population trusts bloggers more than ecommerce sites.

Why Sell Advertising Space Direct?

There are several reasons why selling Advertising Space for Banner Ads is a better alternative to Adsense and ad networks. Here are a few:

How do I find Advertisers?

Advertisers have learnt that it’s better to place their Banner Ad on a directly relevant website or blog which appeals to their target market. Find websites which come up for keywords your blog ranks highly for. Contact the non-competing websites which you believe would be interested in advertising on your blog.

Send them a polite email stating why you believe their advertising on your blog would be beneficial to them. Give them some pricing options together with your website analytics or statistics. You can link to your “advertise here” page if you have one. If not, you should create one.

Personalise each email by using the contact’s name or the site’s name. Keep a record of who you’ve contacted in a spreadsheet together with their responses.

Should I use an Ad Space Auction?

Ad Space Auctions (also known as a Banner Auction) provide an additional means of showcasing the Advertising Space you have up for sale. It’s like selling items on a normal auction website, only you sell Ad Space.

You normally have a couple of options for creating the listing including the standard auction, buy-out for a specific price and allowing potential advertisers to make you their best offer.

A link to your website on your auction page allows buyers to browse and see what’s on offer. You can also capture a screenshot, upload your site statistics and specify your terms and conditions.

The benefit of using an Ad Space Auction is you get additional exposure without giving up direct sales you find yourself.

If you have multiple spots to sell, you can either sell your quantities at a specified amount or use the Dutch auction feature to list a series of static banners or multiple rotating spots.

How much should I charge for Banner Advertising?

Many bloggers and content site owners remain unsure of how much to charge for Ad Space. Overcharging will turn advertisers away whilst undercharging means cutting yourself short.

Compare what other blogs are charging in your niche. Take into account their page rank and unique visitor count. You can find this information in on their “advertise” page or request a media kit.

You can test the waters by putting your Ad Space up for auction. Of course, you can set a reserve price so your space doesn’t sell for less than you’re willing to accept.

Ad Space Pricing Indicators

There are a few things to look for when costing your advertising space:

Costing Methods for Advertising Space

Before placing your available space for sale, consider how you’re going to charge advertisers:

If you’re accepting payment via any method other than time placements, you will need to keep thorough records and provide reporting to your advertisers. Software is available to assist you.

Most bloggers don’t offer direct advertising based on some action or event taking place. It makes their income is too dependent on the quality of the advertisement. Many just look to sell time-based advertising.

What Conditions Should I Impose?

Remember to always specify your requirements and creative specifications, such as:

Selling advertising space yourself is definitely more time consuming. The process has been made simple with the help of Ad Space Auction websites. However, it’s still not a passive option. Just like any other business model, the more work you put in, the higher the rewards are.

Adding Sizzle to Your Blog Entries

Posted on November 17th, 2009 in Uncategorized | No Comments »

Blog entries not only attract new readers but they also keep them coming back. A popular blog is normally judged to be so by the number of subscribers it has and you can thank the content of the site for that. The blog reader is initially attracted to the site because the theme of the content is something that holds an interest for them. The ability to ’spice up’ the content is what brings them back. Therefore no matter how mundane the ‘chore’ of blog posting may seem to you it is important to maintain a certain ‘appeal’ to retain your readers.

The key here will be to engage the blog reader right away in order to encourage them to read through the entire post. Although your ‘opening’ is somewhat critical to keep the readers’ interest there is still no substitute for quality throughout the body of the content.

Let’s review 5 different ‘angles’ you can approach your blog posting with to help immediately captivate or involve your audience.

Direct Questions at Them

By directly asking your reader a question you can immediately ‘involved’ them in what it is you are talking about. This method of ‘talking to them’ as opposed to ‘talking at them’ has a stimulating reaction that further encourages their ‘participation’ in your post. Your delivery is on a more personal level which tends to more readily engage the reader.

Use a Folksy Comparison

The use of a short story or anecdote to help establish your point tends to engage people more fully in what it is you are saying. When used at the beginning of your post this can be very effective at maintaining their attention throughout the balance of your entry.

Paint a Mental Image

Painting an image for your reader helps to draw upon their sense of imagination thereby drawing them deeper the ‘conversation’ of your post. In essence you are flipping a switch to stimulate them thereby increasing their involvement.

Analogies

This approach is widely use and very successful since it has the ability to appeal to many different people on different levels. Analogies are especially effective for making a point that may be otherwise difficult to make. We are creating a ‘common ground’ where it is easier for many to relate to how a particular point may affect them personally.

Shock

Nothing gets someone’s attention better then to shock them with facts, statistics, or deductive assumptions. Here we are using an emotion to capture the attention of the reader. The shock value of our delivery has more impact when the reader can relate to what it is being said to them.

Your blog entries are what fuel the growth, strength, and popularity of your blog. Subscribers are initially attracted to the ‘theme’ of the content but often return because of the way in which it was delivered. A popular blog recognizes the need to deliver its content in a way that can captivate the blog reader. By doing so the reader is further compelled to complete the entire entry. By adopting some of the suggestions we reviewed above you will be able to add a little ’sizzle’ to your blog posting. By doing so you will be keeping your readers informed, entertained and most importantly…loyal!
